William F. Reilly Jr., Esq. - Attorney, Fisherman, and Generous Husband (Maybe Too Generous)

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of William F. Reilly Jr., Esq., 78, a long-time resident of Millville, NJ, on February 11, 2025.

Born in 1946 in Stamford, CT, Bill graduated from Pennsylvania Military College (1968) and John Marshall Law School (1973). A fierce defender in the courtroom and an even fiercer surf fisherman, Bill spent his life arguing cases, battling fish, and surviving four marriages-each more expensive than the last. In addition to being a professional ex-husband, Bill was also a loving father of two children, Devin Reilly, Sr., and Merritt Reilly Thomas, and grandfather of six grandchildren.

As a seasoned attorney, Bill built a successful legal career, mastering the art of persuasion, whether in front of a judge, a jury, or a skeptical bartender questioning his tab. If there was one thing Bill loved more than debating case law, it was surf fishing off of the beaches of Long Beach Island, N.J. To Bill, fishing wasn't just a hobby-it was a second profession. He was known for his sharp wit, persuasive arguments, and ability to charm just about anyone. He spent most of his money on fishing gear, SUVs, bait, and legal settlements, leaving his children, Devin and Merritt, with a wealth of stories and an impressive collection of rods and reels.

Beyond his love for fishing, Bill had a deep affection for animals, especially his dogs, who were treated more like beloved family members than pets. They dined like royalty, had the best seats in the house, and were often the only ones who could get away with ignoring his legal advice.

In lieu of flowers, his family asks that you make an unnecessary impulse purchase, ignore the fine print on a contract, or go fishing in his honor. His ashes will be scattered in the waters of Long Beach Island-along with a few dollar bills, to keep tradition alive.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Levoy Theatre, 126-130 N High Street, Millville, NJ, on Thursday, February 27, 2025, from 3:00-7:00 p.m. The celebration will include appetizers, drinks, and a legal disclaimer that no further marriages or financial agreements will be honored posthumously.

Donations will be accepted to benefit the Cumberland County SPCA, in memory of Bill.
