Mary Cugasi

August 23, 1927 — May 23, 2021

Mary (Scancella) Cugasi, 93, beloved and delightfully headstrong matriarch, decided it was time to pass away peacefully on May 23, 2021. An eternally devout Catholic, Mary likely arrived at Heaven’s gate carrying a freshly-baked pound cake and a platter of her best raviolis to help kick off the festivities.

Born and raised in Bristol Boro and rather defiant, Mary loved the water and reveled in sneaking a forbidden swim with her sisters in the Delaware River. She was an avid baseball player, bowler, and thoroughly enjoyed playing poker while bending her elbow with a glass of brandy alongside lifelong girlfriends Laura Spadaccino, Gloria Fink, Mary Pierro, Angie Sinacori, Carmella Caucci, and Helen Petilillo.

Mary made sure the front door was always open and the coffee was always on. Her kitchen continuously churned out homemade pasta, meatballs, chicken cutlets, and baked goodies. The dinner table conversations were largely unfiltered, loaded with laughter, and laced with her signature quotes, “Tu sei pazzo”, “Oofah”, and “Scriva quando arriva”.

Mary is predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Peter Cugasi, Sr., parents Julio and Gina Scancella, brothers James, John and Mario Scancella, her sisters Vera Cuttone, Louise Rossi, Santina Fizzano, and Helen Nalbone. She leaves behind son Peter Cugasi and his wife Lisa of Yardville, NJ, daughter Maria Slover and husband Bill of Pennington, NJ, and son John Cugasi, of Sarasota, FL. A dedicated grandmother for 43 years, her unbridled play time and discreet deliveries of Tastycake treats will be greatly missed by six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and friends, including a special bond with Joseph and Donna Festa, Sister Marilou MacDonald, and her amazingly kind neighbors from Indian Red Road.

Services will be held Monday, June 21, 2021 at Queen of the Universe Church, 2443 Trenton Road, Levittown, PA with visitation hours 10-11am, and mass starting at 11am. Interment to follow, 1:00pm at Washington Crossing National Cemetery, 830 Highland Road, Newtown, PA. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Festa Foundation, 19 Joan Trail, Langhorne, PA 19047.
