Herbert E. "Gene" Garner, a devoted husband, father, and proud veteran, passed away on Saturday, January 25, 2025, at Holland Village Senior Living in Southampton, PA. He was born on September 2, 1946, in the Philippines, and his journey through life was marked by his unwavering commitment to family, his profession, and his country.
Gene served honorably in the U.S. Navy, stationed on the USS Tripoli during the Vietnam War from 1964 to 1967. He took great pride in his service and was a true patriot. After his time in the military, he spent nearly 20 years working at Bond Products, where he was known for his expertise in designing, manufacturing, and repairing machines for the carpet industry. His creativity and dedication did not end with his career; Gene also started Garner Machine Company out of his home, showcasing his innovative spirit as an entrepreneur.
Outside of his professional accomplishments, Gene was a loving father to his daughter Lisa Hermanns and a dedicated caregiver to both his wife, Dorothy (Thompson), and his late daughter, Kimberly Garner, as they faced health challenges. His life was a reflection of selflessness, as he managed to balance his work with the demands of caring for his family.
In his later years, Gene battled undiagnosed health issues that began in 2024. Unfortunately, he received a diagnosis of ALS during Thanksgiving week of that year, a condition that took a rapid toll on his physical abilities. Despite this, he remained surrounded by love and support from his family, which he cherished deeply.
Gene had a passion for sports, particularly cheering for the Philadelphia Phillies and the Eagles, a fondness that brought joy to his life and was shared with those around him. His personality was defined by kindness and a sense of determination, as he faced life's challenges with grace.
He is survived by his daughter, Lisa Hermanns, and siblings Espie Nandonza Ordonio and Ricardo Huelves. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dorothy, and his daughter, Kimberly.
A graveside service to celebrate Gene's life will be held on Friday, January 31, 2025, at Oakland Cemetery in Philadelphia, PA, beginning at 10:30 AM.
Gene leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication, and resilience that will be remembered by all who knew him. Rest in peace, dear Gene.
