Eugene J Sauers

Eugene Sauers, resident of Levittown, PA, died October 6, 2021, at St. Mary Medical Center, Langhorne, PA. Born in Landingville, PA on October 5, 1932, Eugene was the son of the late John J. and Stella (Whelan) Sauers. He is preceded in death by his brothers Lawrence, Francis and Jack Sauers and sister Mary (Sauers) Rosenberger. Gene was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Gene is survived by his wife of 52 years, Rita (Markowski) Sauers, a daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen (Sauers) and James Schally of Boiling Springs, PA, and a son, daughter-in-law and grandson, Jeff, Cheryl (Ferdon) and Jonathan Sauers of Ewing, NJ. Gene will also be sadly missed by sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, and nephews.

He graduated from Pottsville Catholic High School in 1950 where he was an outstanding member of the football team. As a result of his prowess on the gridiron, he was selected to the 1949 Schuylkill County All Star team and played in the annual "Dream Game" in the same year. Subsequently in 2002, he was inducted into the Allen-Rogowicz chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame.

After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict. He was assigned to the U.S. Naval Minesweeping Task Force and for the next 3 1/2 years he served aboard the Minesweeper U.S.S. Jubilant, U.S.S. Herald and the Destroyer/Minesweeper U.S.S. Macomb. He was discharged with honor in 1954.

For the next few years Eugene was employed by Alcoa, Capital Bakery, Knights Life Ins. Co., and Beacon Loan. In 1964 he became employed by the PA Dept. of Public Welfare as a Resources Examiner where he accepted a position with the Bucks County Assistance office. He became a supervisor in 1967 and a manager in 1971. For the next 20 years he was part of the management at the Assistance Office until his retirement in 1991. Gene found his niche in the long-term care nursing home field. As a result of his experience and expertise, he immediately opened the Sauers Services for the Elderly upon his retirement. Gene was able to assist hundreds of families who had to place loved ones into a nursing home and was a sought-after guest speaker by many organizations. At the urging of his clients, and with assistance from his wife and son, in 2013 he authored a book entitled "Medicaid, PA Nursing Homes and You." The book was used as a guide by many law firms. He was also a consultant to several law firms regarding Medicaid rules and regulations. He continued to run his business until October 2019.

Gene was also a rabid sports fan. He made many trips to away Phillies and Eagles games with his son. He was also an avid walker/jogger and usually spent at least 2 hours a day doing this, rain, or shine. He had an extremely outgoing personality and was well known and well-liked by everyone who knew him.

Gene was a member of St. Michael's Church and Knights of Columbus, 3rd Degree Member of Council #4215.

Family and friends are invited to gather Saturday, October 23, 2021, from 10:30 – 11:30 am at the Galzerano Funeral Home, 3500 Bristol – Oxford Valley Road, Levittown, PA 19057. Funeral service will begin at 11:30 am. Interment will be held privately at the convenience of the family.
