Peter J. Cugasi Sr., age 86, of Levittown, passed away peacefully on Tues., Jan. 11, 2011 at St. Mary Hospital in Langhorne. Born and raised in Shenandoah, PA, the son of Cosmo and Rose Cugasi, he was a resident of Trenton, NJ for 28 years; eventually moving to Levittown 33 years ago. He was a retired 42 year employee of Congoleum Corp. in Hamilton, NJ. Mr. Cugasi served with the U.S. Naval Armed Guard during WWII, and most notably received many awards and medals for his participation in two Murmansk runs which were highly dangerous convoys to supply Russia. He also served as Naval Guard in the New London Naval Submarine Base during the Korean War. He was a member of, and recent past President of, the Delaware Valley U.S. Naval Armed Guard/Merchant Marine Veterans Assoc. who actively pursued the local effort to establish the Washington Crossing National Veterans Cemetery. Mr. Cugasi was an accomplished pool player, and a well-known community advocate; but most of all he loved his home and family. He will be greatly missed by his wife of 61 years Mary (nee: Scancella); his children Peter Jr. and his wife Lisa of Yardville, NJ, Maria Burke-Slover and her husband William of Pennington, and John Cugasi of Marina del Rey, CA. He is also survived by his adoring grandchildren Tessia and James Cugasi, Amy and Kyle Burke, John Slover, and Mia and Vincent Cugasi; his sisters Rita Land, Antoinette Ritz, and Rose Festa; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and good friends. Relatives and friends are invited to call on Monday, 8:30-10am, at the Galzerano Funeral Home, 3500 Bristol-Oxford Valley Rd. in Levittown. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:30am at the Immaculate Conception Church in Levittown. Interment will be conducted at a later date in Washington Crossing National Veterans Cemetery.
